OK. I'll ask....
Why am I the only one pissed about the new government’s Women, Children and Disabled ministry? Am I just being stupidly sensitive and outraged by proxy? Where are all my opinionated, strong, smart girlfriends on this?
Perhaps an explanation of my ire is in order.
Disclaimer. I don’t believe women need help.
I believe there ARE some women who need help, certainly, just as there are some men who need help, but roundly lumping women with the youth, children, and disabled people creates the criminally incorrect impression of a wedge of second-class citizenry, shepherded together in the care of this minister, who are incapable of determining their own destinies, who are homogenous in their infirmity.
That’s just bullshit.
I would be blinded by amazement if it could be proved that the polygamous, amoral, paternal values which characterise the very pinnacle of the current SA leadership, did NOT have anything to do with the formation of this new ministry. And THAT fact accepted, I’m dumb-founded that there has not been a fire-storm of response to it. Quite the opposite in fact. I’ve not heard a word of dissent in all the political analysis I’ve watched on TV, listened to on the radio etc… I’ve raised the question twice on Twitter, the first on Sunday afternoon, where it was met by the sound of……crickets… and the second, on a busy Monday morning, eliciting a single “What ya mean?” from Joy-Mari…and some hours later a “feminist reaction to what?” from Tania.
What does this “thunderous silence” say about the feminist sorority that find themselves paying taxes to belong to and be championed by this new ministry? Please don’t tell me that the sisters are double-dealing us…
They’re not playing advantage from both ends of this stick, are they? Y’know…”We Want Equality” *and* “Different Rules For Girls and Boys!”?
That would really be disappointing. Really.
So, ladies, WTF is going on here? Set me straight, please. teachme@andreinafrica.com
